Marine Drive

Marine Drive in Kochi, is a popular hangout and this scenic stretch offers a spectacular view of the backwaters and the Kochi Harbour.

Jews Street

Jew Town in Mattancherry is famous for the antique shops all along its sides. The colonial buildings lining the street add to its old-world charm. The Jew Town is a narrow street between Mattancherry Palace and the Synagogue.

Take a walk along the Jew Town and you can breathe antiquity. The curio and antique shops along the street are capable of enchanting the visitors with their variety and rarity. A big vaarpu (bronze vessel) almost three metres in diameter is one of the major attractions here.

Jewish Synagogue

The Paradesi Synagogue, in a corner of Jew Town, is more than a hundred years old and houses many rare antiques. The synagogue, that woos many visitors, adds to the quaint charm of Mattancherry.

The Jewish synagogue was built in 1568, almost 1500 years after the beginning of the Jewish connection with Kerala. It was built on the land, adjacent to the Mattancherry Palace, given by the erstwhile king of Cochin.

Chottanikkara

Chottanikkara temple, dating back to early 10th century, is situated about 18 km from the city. Here, Goddess Bhagavathy is worshipped in three forms – Saraswathi, Bhadrakali and Durga.

It is believed that mentally ill patients who come to the temple and pray to the goddess will be cured by her. Near the temple, one can see a tree covered with long nails. These nails have been hammered in by devotees using their foreheads only. This practice is believed to have the effect of permanently disabling the evil spirit residing in the patient’s body and causing his mental imbalance.

Vallarpadam Church

The Catholic Bishop's Conference of India (CBCI) has raised the historic Church of Our Lady of Ransom at Vallarpadam Island in Kochi to the status of a National Pilgrim Centre. The President of the Catholic Bishops? Conference of India, Archbishop Cardinal Telesphore P. Topo, recently handed over the related documents to the Archbishop of Varappuzha, Dr. Daniel Acharuparampil.

Addressing a press meet, Dr. Daniel Acharuparampil said that the elevation of the status of the historic Marian pilgrim destination on the Vallarpadam Island to a national pilgrim centre is the precursor towards Rome declaring it a minor basilica of the Catholic Church. The CBCI has already sent the details regarding this to the Vatican.
